Do you find yourself running short on time and wondering where the day went? In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get sidetracked! We have so many forums for communication that sometimes work objectives get lost in the day-to-day shuffle. To avoid unproductivity, here are some tips to keep you focused.
#1 Take Regular Breaks
This may seem counterintuitive, but take breaks. When you break your day into intervals, you get a moment to think about things. Hitting the pause button for a minute or two can stop interruptions from happening, remind you of your goals and give you perspective on what you’re actually getting done. A break is also the perfect time for a snack, which can rejuvenate your entire mentality about the workday.
#2 Hold Standing Meetings
Rule of thumb. If your legs start going numb and you haven’t reached the point of your meeting, you’re wasting your time. Try to avoid meetings without purpose by investing in whiteboards and easels, where you can easily jot down your objectives pre-meeting.
#3 Quit Multitasking
Research has shown us that flipping back and forth in between projects is actually detrimental to completing the project. Instead, reach for a handy notepad. Make a list of importance, assign deadlines to each project and complete each by priority.
#4 Minimize Interruptions
Remind yourself that it’s more than OK to disconnect from emails and phones. Just make sure to check in once every two hours. This is called being proactive instead of reactive. This is where you designated a time to address communications rather than answer them as they land in your inbox.
#5 Learn to Say No
One of the most important things about managing a job is managing expectations. You can’t possible do everything. If you’re overwhelmed at work, speak up! No one wants a job half done. It’s important to work as a team in the office environment.
